Intersections 2
Building on the learning from Intersections 1, Intersections 2 engages your organization in a change process to better position your workplace and volunteer environment as welcoming to immigrant volunteers. Intersection 2 targets governance and management structures and processes that create an inviting organizational culture.

In the fall of 2009, Volunteer Centres in eight pilot communities hosted one-day group learning sessions to integrate the individual learning modules with practical approaches and strategies to engage immigrant volunteers.
The following eight communities participated in the project:
- Grande Prairie
- Brooks
- Lethbridge
- Medicine Hat
- Okotoks
- Red Deer
- Vegreville
- Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray)
Project goals
The specific goals of the Intersections 1 project include:
- To increase the body of knowledge about recent immigrants (immigrated to Canada after 1999) living in Alberta’s rural communities and these individuals’ community engagement, specifically volunteer activities.
- To increase the inclusiveness of the rural Alberta nonprofit/voluntary sector to immigrants.
- To build networks between organizations with expertise in the area of immigrant services and NPVS organizations in other sub-sectors such as the arts, recreation and health.
- To create awareness of tools available to the NPVS focusing on diversity.
- To facilitate community engagement and enhance integration of immigrants through volunteerism.

Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund
The Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund supports the Alberta Government’s efforts to foster equality, promote fairness, and encourage the creation of inclusive workplaces and communities. The Education Fund complements and supports the human rights and diversity work of community organizations, the Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission and educational initiatives undertaken by the Human Rights and Citizenship Branch of the Department of Culture and Community Spirit.
Norquest College Centre for Excellence in Intercultural Education
NorQuest College’s proven expertise in adult education, intercultural studies and rural delivery makes it a natural fit for the Intersections project. NorQuest will be accessed for research, resource development and facilitation support throughout the project. NorQuest College provides post-secondary education for adult learners with a wide range of social, cultural, economic, and educational experiences. With four campuses, regional learning sites, and a virtual campus, NorQuest serves more than 10,000 students annually and reaches over 200 Alberta communities with its diverse delivery modes.
The Centre for Excellence in Intercultural Education offers intercultural training for organizations and employers. Our intercultural and cultural diversity training for Canadian-born employees will enhance intercultural competence in the workplace and organizational contexts. We can tailor our workshops to your specific organizational needs through prior assessment and consultation.
