Supporting Rural Organizations to Better Engage Immigrant Volunteerism

Volunteer Alberta has been on the road, travelling across Alberta to hold focus groups for Intersections: Supporting Rural Organizations to Better Engage Immigrant Volunteerism, a project made possible by the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Education Fund. There have been a number of studies done on ethno-cultural engagement in volunteerism in large urban centers but there is a lack of information about the smaller communities that immigrants choose to settle in.

We have already had great focus groups in Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Okotoks, Fort McMurray and Vegreville; one with nonprofit/voluntary sector organizations and one with immigrants new to the community. The purpose of having 2 focus groups is to identify trends in attitudes and perceptions toward immigrants in a rural context. After each focus group we have received comments and emails thanking us for allowing both the organizations and the immigrants an opportunity to come together to have an informal discussion.

"I hope that this plan reaches the goal and that many more immigrants old and new are aware of this project and come out to the meetings." -Focus Group Participant

The information that we have pulled from each community has been incredibly valuable and will prove to be our greatest resource for our next step, which will be to develop a resource with Norquest. This training may take many forms, from actual workshops to a training manual to a combination of both in an effort to make it as easy as possible for nonprofit organizations around Alberta to engage new immigrants.
