PIC Survey Results now available

Volunteer Alberta, through funding from the Canada Volunteerism Initiative (CVI), contracted Cambridge Strategies Inc. to complete a survey of Alberta's Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector on their use of Police Information Checks (PICs). The survey has been completed and the results are now available.

Some Key Findings:

  1. The Voluntary Sector in Alberta is starting to use many more police information checks as part of volunteer screening and staff recruitment.
  2. The voluntary sector is facing escalating costs for police information checks that impacts program delivery and effectiveness.
  3. Volunteer Alberta wants to work with the provincial government, police services, and insurers and advocates to design and implement a centralized, comprehensive, current and reliable information screening process that protects the agencies, their clientele and respects the privacy of volunteers.
  4. New policies, practices, education and assessment tools and public awareness programs also have to be designed and developed around volunteer screening.
