The Co-operators, a national insurance company, developed Community Guard, an innovative pilot program specifically for Alberta's Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector to ensure your organization's good work continues with the confidence that your organization is protected. This Risk Management product is unique in its ability to offer the sector a stable premium in a comprehensive yet affordable and accessible policy.
The Co-operators Community Guard is a bundle of specialized insurance products and risk solutions for Alberta’s Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector. It provides:
- third party liability financial protection against lawsuits
- custom liability coverage, which includes Directors’ and Officers’ Liability
- property crime coverage
In addition to those provided, Community Guard offered by The Co-operators
also has stable premiums – giving you a year’s notice if premiums need to
increase more than 5%.

The Co-operators helps Nonprofit/ Voluntary Sector organizations maintain insurability by having their specially trained agents review their risk management practices. In addition, The Co-operators gives back to the community through a special Community Guard nonprofit fund and are easy to access with specially trained agents in the voluntary sector. However, since the program is a pilot project, only a few agencies are currently involved - please contact Volunteer Alberta for an agent near you.
Along with this initiative, they are subsidizing a first year Volunteer Alberta membership (Associate Level) for any Nonprofit/Voluntary Sector organization purchasing Community Guard. The
